Thursday: Tivoli Guided Tour including Hadrian’s Villa
 and Villa d’Este

Following breakfast which is included at your hotel, you will be met and picked up at 8:30 am at your hotel in Rome.  You will be transferred in air-conditioned vehicle to the historic, popular, and beautiful resort destination --- Tivoli.  Tivoli is the area where ancient Romans retreated and relaxed during the summertime.  Famed for its beauty and crystal-clear water, Tivoli is well-known and world-famous for being the lovely town outside of Rome where many magnificent Roman villas were built.

On your included tour this morning, you will have the opportunity to visit not one, but two, UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Your first stop on this morning’s included tour is Hadrian’s Villa, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Here at Hadrian’s Villa you will admire the unique combination of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman architectural heritage, which reminded Emperor Hadrian of the monuments and sites he adored during his travels.   Hadrian’s Villa, also known as Villa Adriana, is a very impressive masterpiece of the Roman architecture and provides visitors the greatest example of Alexandrian gardens recreating ancient and sacred landscapes.

Following your visit to Hadrian’s Villa, you will then reboard your vehicle and enjoy a short 15- to 20-minute drive to view and enjoy a tour of one of the most outstanding, spectacularly-beautiful villas in all of Italy.  Cardinal d’Este created a palatial setting surrounded by a spectacular terraced garden in the late-Renaissance mannerist style, which took advantage of the dramatic slope but required innovations in bringing a sufficient water supply, which was employed in cascades, water tanks, troughs and pools, water jets and fountains, water games. The result is one of the series of great 17th-century villas with water-play structures in the hills.

Villa d’Este always “impresses” visitors with a real “WOW” and is a magnificent example of spectacular Renaissance architecture.  Inspiration was drawn, along with many statues  and much of the marble used for construction, from the nearby Villa Adriana, the palatial retreat of Emperor Hadrian.  Using the Roman techniques of hydraulic engineering to supply water to a sequence of fountains, the Cardinal created a beautiful fantasy garden. Both its architectural elements as well as its water features had an enormous influence on future ‘

European landscape design. This villa is refreshed by 500 jets in truly impressive, spectacular fountains, pools and water troughs.

In addition, the perfectly-manicured Italian Renaissance gardens and splendid grottoes provide a truly upscale ambiance and atmosphere which you shall never forget!.  Interestingly, the extra-spectacular, beautiful gardens and fountains at Villa d’Este influenced the development of beautiful, magnificent, grand gardens and fountains throughout all of Europe.  When you visit this villa and walk through the lovely gardens and spectacular gardens, you will agree that the Villa d’Este has been correctly designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Following your tour of Villa d’Este, you will be returned to Rome about 2:30 pm.   The rest of the afternoon and evening you are free to independently see-and-experience Rome “on your own”.

Friday: Return flight back home OR extend to your stay in Europe
to a city of your choice.

Following your breakfast included at your hotel in Rome, you have one of 2 options:
